Challenges

To provide a unique design, approved by the community, for a downtown public square area that included a water feature and public seating, while not infringing on the space needed by surrounding restaurants.

Solution

AMES A/E facilitated four public meetings to unveil preliminary concepts and to gain public support. The designs incorporated the use of locally mined granite, an historic material, and preserved the area’s mature trees.
Central design elements included
- A main water feature with a cascading six-foot column fountain leading to a turbulent stream. Entitled The Source, this feature represents the upper Kenduskeag Stream as it makes its way to the downtown Bangor area and meets the Penobscot River.
- A rise in the pavement that provides a bridge between the turbulent stream and a quiet reflecting pool, leading to a bubbling four-foot at-grade water column that bursts from the ground. This design element represents the meeting of the Penobscot River with the ocean in Penobscot Bay. The bridge between the two fountains represents Bangor as a bridge between the Western Mountains and Penobscot Bay.
