AMES A/E: An Historical
Timeline
1974 Brian Ames, with partner Albert Nelson, opens Ames
& Nelson Incorporated, a structural and civil engineering firm, in an
office at 177 Exchange Street in Bangor, ME. One of the very first projects the
firm undertakes is the Judson Heights subdivision for Judson "Bud" Grant, a
developer who continues to use AMES A/E services today.
1978 Ames & Nelson Incorporated becomes Ames
Engineers Incorporated when Brian Ames purchases Albert Nelson's share, and the
firm grows to four employees.
1984 Anderson-Nichols, a Boston-based A/E firm, purchases
Ames Engineering, which operates as Anderson-Nichols/Ames. The firm now
employs eight, including an architect, and begins to promote full-service
capabilities.
1988 Brian Ames buys the firm back, renames it The Ames
Corporation, and moves to the firm's current location at 115 Main Street,
Bangor.
1992 The Ames Corporation purchases A.E. Sturgeon &
Company, the second largest land surveying firm in northern and central Maine, and
adds a full slate of land surveying services.
2003 The Ames Corporation changes its name to AMES A/E to
spotlight both its architectural and engineering services.
2005 AMES A/E merges with New Hampshire-based Millette,
Sprague & Colwell to form AMES MSC and maintains a branch office in
Portsmouth, NH. 2006 AMES A/E completes its largest construction project to date, a $20 million Army Aviation Support Facility. At the same time, work continues on Judson Grant's property at Judson Heights. Today, the firm employs 45 people.
